Dear church, let us not give Coronavirus 19 a stronghold of fear in our hearts. There is fear of the virus itself, fear of lack and fear of the unknown. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, who will lead us into the fullness of His plan. God gives scientists, medical staff and governments wisdom, and let us obey them. In the Old Testament they quarantined people when they suspected a contagious disease. During this pandemic, God calls us to be overcomers. He calls us to stand and say no to the schemes of the enemy. “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 37-39.)
Irrational fear is a spirit and needs to be resisted in prayer and in action. “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.” (2 Tim 1:7) The Coronavirus is trying to intimidate both the believers and nonbelievers.
When there is panic or fear of lack, people become very self-focused and begin to hang onto things -- even toilet paper. But Jesus says: “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33)
Jesus is preparing a revival that will cover the earth and He is looking for a victorious church. Gideon was hiding in fear when an angel caught him by surprise and began to speak to him. God told Gideon what he did not believe himself, that he was a mighty warrior. Gideon rose and cleared the idols from his people and then he stood up against the enemy. With only three hundred soldiers he defeated an army of thousands. God is speaking to the Assembly of God church to rise and become another Gideon. Let us examine our own hearts and see if there are strongholds of fear and where they come from. Many times, the roots of fear lead to an idol. Let us repent not only for ourselves but also for our community, and then come in the opposite spirit. Tithes and offerings are ways of setting us free from the worship of wealth and money. Let us tear down the greedy pursuit of gain by giving. Finally, in prayer, let us tell the enemy that his weapons formed against us and our community will not succeed.
I am calling the church to fast and pray from Tuesday, April 7- Thursday, April 9. On Good Friday morning we will set it up so that we can connect using ZOOM and take communion together. However, don’t wait until Easter; pray every day as a family.
I call you to be generous towards others.
In Wuhan, the city where the virus outbreak started, the Christians went around dressed in protective gear to feed the needy and to pray for the sick. According to Cindy Jacobs they saw many miracles.
This is an opportunity to bring the church to your home. The enemy has always been trying to shut down the church, whether Hitler or communists or the virus, but the church has always survived.
